Challenge #1: Making Decisions

At lunch, Kalvin and his friends discuss whether to play kickball, soccer, baseball, or dodgeball. Ethan and Ava each have a suggestion.

Ethan: We can make a spinner that looks like this:

Ava: We can roll a number cube. If it lands on 1, we play kickball. A roll of 2 means soccer, 3 means baseball, 4 means dodgeball, and we can roll again if it’s 5 or 6.

1) Do you think Ethan’s idea is a fair way to pick the game? Explain your reasons.

2) Do you think Ava’s idea is a fair way to pick the game? Explain your reasons.

  1. I think Ethan's idea is better because its fair and the spinner is equal

  2. #Ethan game is fair because his idea is a spinner it is a 1/4 chance or 25% chance it can land on kickball, soccer, baseball, or dodgeball. Ava's game is fair to because it is 1/4 that she will pick any of the (25%)

  3. We picked yes because the spinner represents all the sports that the kids wanna play and all of them have a 1/4 chance of getting to play the sport they want to play.

Ava's idea is not fair because theres four sport that the kid wanna play and theres 6 sides on the dice and 2 of the sports would have to numbers and the other 2 would have 1 number on its side.

  4. Ava's and Ethans game both are fair because in Ethans game each game has the probability. And in Ava's game they role a dice and each game has it's number and if it doesnt get a 4 or below they can roll again.

  5. @RKasten Yes i think Ethans idea is fair.

I think that Ethans idea is fair because the spinner is equal. They all have a 1/4 chance of being picked.

yes i think that Avas idea is fair.

I think that Avas idea is fair because they all just have 1,2,3 and 4 and if they roll a 5 or a 6 its ok they just have to roll again.

  8. Each probability is equal except that Ava's probability make take more time instead of a flick. In ethan's idea he has a 1/4 chance and so does Ava.
